Is it nearly time to start buying?
The September Quarter 2008 BizExchange Index revealed business prices hit a new low as baby boomers looking to retire try to sell into a buyers’ market.
Another key finding was that the growth in the volume of businesses listed for sale had slowed suggesting that lower prices and an excess of businesses for sale was making current owners think twice about selling.
Not surprisingly market sentiment in relation to the future value of businesses continued to soften from already low levels.
Most significantly in this survey period was a large increase in the number of respondents saying “don’t know”.
Commenting on this, David Bird, Chairman of BizExchange said “the September quarter witnessed increasing uncertainty about the extent of the credit crisis and its ramifications. The word “stagflation” reappeared.
He added “contrarian investors start looking when uncertainty peaks. With the recent massive government intervention maybe that point has been reached or passed. In that event the old adage ‘Time in the market, not timing’ may be applicable.
Since bloated valuations have been pricked there are signs that good/value buying opportunities are emerging. This would be particularly so for cashed up investors or buyers confident with sectors that they know.
Mr Bird announced the establishment of a new website by the BizExchange group. The new site www.valuemybusiness.com.au will enable business owners to do a quick check on the likely market value of their business on a quarterly basis. The site also outlines the various factors affecting value which determine whether the high or low part of the range is most applicable.
The www.valuemybusiness.com.au site provides bite sized extracts from the main Index covering all industries. For a nominal fee of $50 business owners can obtain a range of values for a business of their size in their industry The BizExchange Index is available on this site to professional advisors for an annual fee of $500.
