BizExchange Asking Price Report: methodology

How every figure in the report is calculated, what is left out, and the limits of the data.

Data source

The report uses listings on BizExchange only. It uses no third-party data and is a new series with its own history.

Quarters and the data date

Quarters end on 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December. The data is taken on the third day after the quarter ends, so that late reports of sales are included. Figures about live listings describe the listings live on that data date.

What counts

Business listings with a published asking price count. These are left out of every figure:

  • listings without a published price (“price on application”)
  • franchise opportunities, which are a different market
  • listings shown from public facts whose original listing could not be confirmed as still available
  • duplicates of the same listing (the oldest is kept)
  • test listings.

Measures

  • Median asking price: the middle asking price of qualifying listings live on the data date. A price range counts at its midpoint; “offers over” counts at the stated figure.
  • Median asking price to profit: the middle of asking price divided by profit, for listings that published a profit (net profit, EBITDA or owner's benefit). The mix of profit types is shown beside the figure.
  • Businesses for sale during the quarter: listings live at any point in the quarter, split into those first published in the quarter and those carried over.
  • Days on market: for live listings, the days from first publication to the data date. Pauses are not subtracted. Listings shown from public facts are counted from when the listing was first seen.
  • Seller-reported sales: the sold price, the sold price as a share of the last asking price, and the days to sell, from sellers who report a sale when they mark a listing sold. These are reported only in aggregate and are not audited.

Minimum sample

A figure is published only when it is based on at least 20 listings (or 20 reported sales). Smaller groups are shown as “Not enough data (fewer than 20 listings)”, never as a number, and still count towards the state and national figures. If the national figures do not reach the minimum, the quarter is skipped; the minimum is never lowered to publish a report.

If only the national figures reach the minimum, the report covers Australia as a whole and says which state and industry figures are closest to the threshold.

Outlier rule

Asking prices under $5,000 or over $50,000,000 are excluded. Multiples under 0.2 or over 25 are excluded from the multiple only. Within every group, values outside the 1st and 99th percentiles of the national figures are excluded. Nothing else is trimmed or adjusted. Medians are used throughout.

Rounding

Money is rounded to the nearest $1,000 and multiples to one decimal place. The downloadable data keeps exact values.

Live figures on the Insights page

The Insights page also shows asking prices now: the number of businesses for sale, the median asking price and the median asking price to profit, nationally, by state and territory and by industry, from every business listing live on BizExchange. They are recalculated once a day and dated. They are a snapshot rather than a report, so they are not kept as a series and can move from day to day. They follow the rules above, with these differences:

  • They count every business listing shown on BizExchange that day, including listings shown from public facts whose original listing has not been confirmed as still available, and duplicates are not removed.
  • Asking prices under $5,000 or over $50,000,000 are excluded, with no percentile trim.
  • Asking price to profit uses only a fixed asking price (not a range or “offers over”) and a profit above zero, of any profit type, and leaves out multiples under 0.3 or over 10, as the business worth calculator does.
  • The minimum sample is the same: a median from fewer than 20 listings is shown as “Too few listings yet”. The number of businesses for sale is always shown.
  • Property and accommodation listings include management rights and freehold, which lift asking prices and multiples. They are marked in the industry table and counted in the national and state figures, and the national figures are also shown without them.

Limitations

  • Asking prices are not sale prices.
  • Sale figures are reported by sellers and are not audited.
  • The data covers listings on BizExchange and may not represent the whole market.
  • Listings shown from public facts reflect what brokers published elsewhere.
